I'd love to know what I'm doing wrong. I've killed all of the red shirts. I even blew off their heads. I can hear growling near the start of the arena, but no matter where I go, I can't find it's source. Looks like I'm supposed to get a message that says "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE PCMR".

Help, please!

Late reply, but if you go to where you spawned and look left, there's a guy on the other side of the fence that you have to kill. You have to go up the stairs and kind of push up against the fence to do it

i was supposed to upload this gameplay but i got busy, it was an interesting game and the screams including the background music gave me the chills!

A unique idea for a horror game. Most of the time I find that guns really take a lot of the scare out of horror games but this did a great job of implementing it.

Thank you for playing! I'm glad you liked it :)

Creepy and interesting nice work.

Thank you!

Gave it a go and sorry if I cut the last part. I'm just staying safe. Either way, great game sir :D

Thank you for playing and for video :)

SPOILERS!

So basically, we are playing as a mass murderer who went insane due to the tragic events in his life and percieves everything as a video game and kills himself in the end, or is there a spirit of said mass murderer trapped in a game that he used to play?

I prefer the second version more than the first one :)

Horror films and video games that are set during the daytime, especially outdoors during the daytime, are extremely rare. Some people think that's because daytime horror isn't scary, but I highly disagree. I believe that the reality is that darkness automatically makes things seem somewhat scary to most people, so when you take darkness out of the equation, it is all left up to you as a storyteller to deliberately create something frightening. You don't have the luxury of relying on darkness to help you out when your attempts at causing fear fall flat. Few are willing to take on that challenge, and fewer still manage to pull it off. I am happy to say that Deathmatch 404 succeeds with flying colors, somehow causing me to feel highly uncomfortable and paranoid right off the bat, despite the unassuming brightly-lit environment, and long before anything scary actually happens in the game. With daytime horror, it's all about creating a really uncanny feeling in the player/viewer, and Deathmatch 404 nails it.

Gave it a go and really enjoyed it!
I like the style, the atmosphere and also the little story it had

I'm a little sad that it didn't work. It kept crashing :(

Hey, I'm sorry for the bug. Try changing the resolution of the game to 1024x768 or 800x600 - it should fix that. :)

hey um lol you should make this games like same everything but with ACTUAL online multiplayer deathmatch and maybe an option to create servers? lol itd be funny if ur opponents were dressed like bots anyways yea maybe?

hey you should make like a real deathmatch 404 itd be awsome! lol maybe there could be a mode were after a long time the like floating spectator comes - just a idea - lol itd be cool

Good. It's a little scary. It's horrible

Crashes instantly on start up

changing the resolution of the game to 1024x768 or 800x600

I tried both of those and it still crashes instantly.

Gave it a go

Very creepy i very much enjoyed it

Pros and cons are down below) Check out the vid here:

Advantages:

1. The game is very creey! The way botes acted upon being shot actually gave me goosebumps!

2. The style was very cool! I love these old shooter games. I think it's authentic and charming just like VHS horror games these days.

3. I see how you took the inspiration from No players online but turned the game into an original experience nonetheless. Plot was intriguing!

Disadvantages:

1. I didn't like how the bots could still make sounds even if their head was shot off. Also, they got stuck in the ground a lot.

2. I think the ending turned out to be a bit bland. So if the main character is being tortured so why then it ends at the end? Maybe it would be cooler to make the player infinitely replay some sequences of the game until they are tired? (But of course there should be some rewards for playing through the level a couple of times more. Maybe more lore). Or the ending could have broken the 4th wall a bit more... Like leaving some files on the desktop or something like that as you have already took some steps towards 4th wall breaking.

3. I think the game would benefit a lot from some more spooks as it is a horror game after all. It would be cool if someone would be sprinting towards main character all of a sudden or something like that.

Overall:

I enjoyed the game and I think it was pretty cool but the ending could be a bit more rewarding. I think there is still place for improvement but overall experience was cool and creepy! I would rate the game 4/5 stars.

Hope my feedback was useful!

how do you run the game after downloading it? thanks in advance.

you have to play it in full screen, at a lower resolution

hi, big thx for the game. greetings from rosti 😀

Thought it was just gonna be a rip off of No Players Online. I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm glad you liked it! Thank you!

(+1)

Really cool game. Having the bots writhe around and scream after shooting them really added a deep level of creepiness. I love games like this, and this was very well executed! Great job!

Thank you! :)

Pretty enjoyable. There's a strong creepy factor thanks to the ambient noises, and I like the story being conveyed across different servers. I only wish the story was a bit more concise.

Thank you and I'm happy you liked it! :)

I had a great time with this game. I really liked No Players Online and your game was a nice spin on that concept. Here's a video of my playthrough with commentary:

Thank you! And I'm glad you liked my "blurriest game ever made" :D

SO GOOD

Thank you for video! :)

I like this style and hope it can be downloaded

I mean - you can download the game directly from this page :)

I finally got my attempt in

Thank you for playing and big thanks for gameplay!

Body photo at the end - it's not real. This is an edited photo of mock-up scene from Queensland Police Museum.

I really wish those kinds of games tried to convey something else than family conflict. Like, you really think i'm gonna care about a family who's already dead while playing a online fps?

If someone appears trying to be someone i once knew i would just kill them (I know you meant it to be a curse or a ghost, but that's really cliche, it's the same old catridge creepypasta stuff).

The only pros i can say about this game is that at least you didn't do the flag mode like NPO and Connection Haunted (and the black shadow is unsettling, good idea)

Imo, the moment you add personal stuff about the main character life into the mmo/fps, you're breaking that immersion of "being alone", it turns out to be something beyond that, involving people around his life, and that is not what i'm expecting from a game with this idea

What would your ideal game with the premise of "playing an abandoned online game" be?

I think the most interesting is dealing with another actual player in game. Like, 1 or two that appear mostly never, but the fact that sometimes they're there is eerie. If you watched the vinensauce active worlds exploration video you know what i'm talking about. When it's so abandoned and you find someone you don't really know what to think out of it, so you may think it's a bot, a dev, a player, there are a lot of space for creativity in this premise.

Interesting idea, thanks for sharing.

that ending picture was not a real dead body right?

(+1)

Of course it's not real. This is an edited photo from Tripadvisor about the Queensland Police Museum. LINK

That's EPIC

Thank you!

Great job, I really like these kind of games!

P.s.: I've found a way to explore outer zones of the map. There's a spot (see pic), right in front of your starting point, where you can jump across the fence and go behind the blue container that's behind your starting point. Once you're there, you can explore the out of reach portions of the map. Nothing particular, but I like it :)

Keep in mind, though: 1) once you've jumped the fence, you won't be able to go back to the play area, you'll have to restart the game to play it properly; 2) don't try to walk on the cyan-textured floors, you'll fall out of the map and you'll have to restart the game.

Shows an error that has an MSDOS logo and exits

Happened to me, too. I solved by changing the resolution of the game to 1024x768.

(+1)

Yeah hah it helped changing it to anything from 1920x1080

(+1)

This is really, really cool! I loved that you even referenced NPO on the page :D It's really cool seeing someone genuinely take a spin on your work and executing it so well. Keep up the good work <3

I enjoyed the game Piotr Rycabel! -

Something about an empty lobby.. seeing only 1 or 2 server rooms open always gives a good creepy vibes.

The story caught me off guard too!

(+1)

Thank you for playing and I'm glad you liked it! Also - thanks a lot for a video!

(+1)(-1)

How very original. Never seen this before.

(+2)(-1)

At first glance, this might look like a No Players Online clone, but when you play it - you'll see the fundamental differences. There are no ghosts here, but a lot of brutality and shooting. I encourage you to play, you will not be disappointed 🖤

(+1)

I was gonna give it a go - though it seems I'm the only one who's reported getting crashes? The game crashes as soon as I see the small msdos box begin loading. Any solutions?

Thank you! Try changing resolution to anything from 1920x1080. It should work best in 1280x720. Sorry for the problems, but that's the rendering specifics of this game. The image renders independently at 240p and apparently Unity doesn't like scaling it to all resolutions.

After lots of attempts, apparently it crashes at everything but 800x600, and it has to be fullscreen at that resolution too and not widescreen, Unfortuantely 720p and 1080p don't work or me as well. Oh well, this'll do.

(+2)

Well Neco you could say that about everything these days. It is not like everything else you play is super original.

agreed :) also Horror really isn't that original anymore sadly :(

Its why I enjoy looking for hidden gems and unique ones when I can find them. My judgment on the game itself is reserved, not that I'm gonna say the game is bad without even playing it. Obvi

(+1)(-1)

I thought it was a really cool game that takes a couple pages out of NPO's book while still having its own feel and creepiness for its own reasons! Worth a playthrough imo!
